Island Ark

Tasmania became an island at the end of the last glaciation over 10,000 years ago and so became a refuge for flora and fauna.

The waters of Bass Strait have protected the Tasmanian wildlife from the introduced European fox. Tasmania is an island ark for many animal species that are now endangered or extinct in mainland Australia. Species such as the eastern quoll, eastern barred bandicoot and Tasmanian devil continue to survive in healthy numbers on the island state.
